Statistical Language Learning by Eugene Charniak,

Statistical Language Learning by Eugene Charniak,
Eugene Charniak breaks new ground in artificial intelligence research by presenting statistical language processing from an artificial intelligence point of view in a text for researchers and scientists with a traditional computer science background.New, exacting empirical methods are needed to break the deadlock in such areas of artificial intelligence as robotics, knowledge representation, machine learning, machine translation, and natural language processing (NLP). It is time, Charniak observes, to switch paradigms. This text introduces statistical language processing techniques -- word tagging, parsing with probabilistic context free grammars, grammar induction, syntactic disambiguation, semantic word classes, word-sense disambiguation -- along with the underlying mathematics and chapter exercises.Charniak points out that as a method of attacking NLP problems, the statistical approach has several advantages. It is grounded in real text and therefore promises to produce usable results, and it offers an obvious way to approach learning: "one simply gathers statistics.

Hands-On AI with Java: Smart Gaming, Robotics, and More
Demystify AI and Make It Work -- or Play! * Give your robot uncanny abilities * Build programs that work intelligently with humans * Add smarts to computer games * Program optimal path-finding for machining and robotics LEARN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WITH DO-IT-YOURSELF PROJECTS Edwin Wise'' "Hands-On AI with Java shows you how to put AI techniques to work in a wide variety of useful and entertaining ways. Robot builders, hobbyists, game developers, automated-help-desk programmers, and even manufacturing engineers can take advantage of Wise's clear explanations and generous samples of customizable Java code. This book shows you how to: * Give computer game characters role-playing and decision-making skills * Simulate evolution to find solutions to hard problems * Develop machine-to-human text interactions for help desks, adventure games, computerized tutorials, and Web agents * Guide machine tools for intelligent behavior, such as tool-path optimization and efficient sheet utilization * Teach your computer to play strategy games * Solve control problems, including the classic inverted-pole problem With its own helpful Web site (and an author who answers e-mails), "Hands-On AI with Java is the perfect starting point in artificial intelligence.

MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory - The MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory was an interdisciplinary research entity at MIT which became one of the most influential and accomplished in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics. Research at MIT in the field of Artificial Intelligence began in 1959.

Friendly artificial intelligence - In future studies, Friendly Artificial Intelligence, or FAI is a model for creating moral and "safe" artificial intelligence, in accordance with the principles of Friendliness theory, advanced by researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky and the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence. Friendliness is used as a term of art distinct from the everyday meaning of the term.

International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence - International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) is a no-profit organization incorporated in California. Its major activity is organizing the biennial International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, the premier international gathering of artificial intelligence researchers and practitioners.

Distributed artificial intelligence - Distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) was a subfield of Artificial intelligence research dedicated to the development of distributed solutions for complex problems regarded as requiring intelligence. These days DAI has been largely supplanted by the field of Multi-Agent Systems.

Intelligence (trait) Intelligence is well recognized as being important for academic success. Some thinkers have explored the idea of collective intelligence, arising from the coordination of many people. There is also an important role for intelligence in other valued life outcomes. Some researchers have proposed that intelligence is associated with job performance (i.e. supervisor ratings), socioeconomic advancement (e.g., level of education, occupation, and income), and social pathology (e.g., adult criminality, poverty, unemployment, dependence on welfare, children outside of marriage). Proponents of multiple-intelligence theories often claim that g is, at best, a measure of academic ability. Intelligence tests are often used to quantify human intelligence. The general factor measured by each intelligence test is known as g (see Fluid and Crystallized Intelligence).
